A landslide near Machhapuchhre Mountain in Kaski district triggered a flash flood in Seti River A landslide near Machhapuchhre Mountain in Kaski district triggered a flash flood in Seti River, sweeping settlements and breaching the river banks downstream on 05 May 2012 at around 0930 hrs. Kharapani village in Sardikhola Village Development Committee (VDC) and Sadal village in Machhapuchhre VDC are worst hit by the powerful outburst. According to National Emergency Center (NEOC), total of 26 people have confirmed dead and 44 gone missing as of 1800 hrs, 07 May 2012. Among them, three were Ukrainian tourists. The bad hit area is 40 km north from Pokhara valley. The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal police personnel have been carrying out search operation with the help of excavators, bulldozers and sniffer dogs. According to local administration, Annapurna area and Pokhara are safe place for trekking and tour, and all touristic areas are away from the vicinity of Seti river. Nepal Tourism Board expresses heartfelt condolence to the families of deceased persons.
The figures released by Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) reveal that visitor arrivals in the month of April 2012 have increased by 14.3% to 59,415 compared to the same month last year, The arrivals from South Asian region have shown positive growth of 35.4% with mixed performance. The arrivals from India and Pakistan were up by 44.5% and 14.8% respectively while arrivals from Bangladesh and Sri-Lanka declined by 12.9% and 41.2% respectively. However, a sustained growth of 36.8% has been observed in the arrivals from the South Asian region during the first 4 months of 2012, in comparison to the same period last year. Asia ( other than South Asian region) saw overall rise of 16.7% in April 2012. Except for Thailand ( -14.7%) almost all the markets have shown positive trend with China ( 42.9%), Malaysia (16.8%), Singapore (5.7%) and Japan (13.1%) compared to the same month last year. Between Jan-Apr 2012, the arrivals from Asia rose by 21.1% compared to the same period last year. Robust growth in International tourist arrivals continues The upward trend which is already seen in January 2012 continues in the third month of the year 2012 showing clearly the rising travel demand towards the destination. Nepal has enjoyed a sustained positive growth in the international visitor arrivals since June 2009. The figures released by Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) reveal that visitor arrivals in the month of March 2012, compared to the same month last year, have increased by 37.2% to 63,799. All regions have shown positive growth in the third month of 2012. The arrivals from South Asian region, have gained overall positive growth of 61.4%. India which constitutes the major market of Nepal, has recorded robust growth of 68.6 % with 6,606 more visitors compared to March 2011. Visitor arrivals from Sri Lanka have gained positive growth with 116.1% along with Bangladesh (19.7%) and, Pakistan (19.5%). India, which is the largest source market for Nepal, has been increasing since the very beginning of 2010. All regions have shown positive growth in the second month of 2012. India which constitutes the major market of Nepal, has recorded positive growth of 28.8 %. However, the arrivals from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have declined by 12.4%, 16% and 23.8%respectively. In aggregate the South Asian segment has registered a positive growth of 20.4%. Arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) have also recorded positive growth of 4.3% in aggregate with mixed performance from the individual countries. The visitor arrivals from Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand have increased by 33.2%, 19.8% 31.5% and 7.9% respectively.
