Nepal celebrates 12th International Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) DayWednesday, May 29th, 2019

Nepal’s tourism industry celebrated the 12th International Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day on May 29, 2019. A procession of all tourism stakeholders took place from Thamel ending at the National City Hall in Bhrikutimandap for the commencement of the official program.

The program started with the offer of garland to at the memory site of Everest heroes Tenzing Norkay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary, and hotel pioneer Boris Lissanevitch. At the gathering in the National City Hall a one-minute silence was observed by all participants and officials in memory of the deceased mountaineers at Mt. Everest during the season’s expedition.

Chief guest at the event was Mr. Gokul Prasad Baskota, Hon’ble Minister for Information and Communication Technology. After the inauguration of the program by the chief guest, certificate and cash prize distribution were conducted including the National Sagarmatha Award and Tenzing Hillary Award. Similarly, letters of appreciation were awarded to sponsors and organizers of Mt. Everest Cleaning Campaign 2019.

Mr. Mohan Krishan Sapkota – Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTA), Mr. Deepak Raj Joshi – CEO of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Mr. Santa Bir Lama - Member Secretary of the Organizing Committee and President of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), Mr. Nabaraj Dahal – President of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), and Everest summiteers also spoke during the program attended by stalwarts of mountain tourism, top officials and stakeholders of Nepal’s tourism sector.
